Youth Drama Group
A new youth drama group
started at the Playhouse in 2008.
We
currently have vacancies for new members.
The first productions,
'The Giant's Giant Pizza' and the 'Trial of The Big Bad Wolf',
by the two youth groups were held in July 2008 and the older
group performed 'The Ash Girl' by Timberlake Wertenbaker, in
the Autumn.
The groups meet
regularly on a Tuesday evening during school term, the juniors
(age 8 to 11) meet at 5 pm, the older group (12-16) from 6 to
7.30 pm. The changeover age is a bit variable depending on productions
currently in rehearsal!

The younger
group performed a specially commissioned play, 'Cake' by Jan

April 2009. The winning challenger, Mike Weston from Melton Mowbray,
donated his work to the actresses and the picture is now hanging
in the Playhouse. |

The
Playhouse, restored to use as a performance venue in 2000, dates
back to 1825 when it was originally built as a theatre for Joseph
Smedley. Since then it has been a school, converted in 1856 by
Kirk and Parry for the Church of England, a library, wartime
shelter and latterly a DSS office. It had fallen vacant by 1994
and Sleaford Little Theatre took the chance to purchase it. Three
years of funding bids, some more successful than others, help
from The Foundation or Sports and Arts, Wren Recycling, local
benefactors and sponsors together with sheer hard labour from
enthusiastic volunteers, culminated in a grand opening in October
2000. The opening event was by invitation only and two nights
of full houses of guests, whose support for the project had made
it all possible, were entertained by SLT members performing The
Beadle's Courtship. The then Mayor of Sleaford, Cllr Jarleth
McGagh and guest Patron, actor James Ellis, cut ceremonial ribbons
to declare The Playhouse open.

The
first full production in the restored Playhouse was 'An Inspector
Calls', by JB Priestley. This performance went on to win acclaim
in the NODA Regional awards

Not only is The Playhouse
the home to Sleaford Little Theatre, but it is also the venue
for touring drama, amateur and professional music of all genres,
talks, fundraising and performing arts classes and is also available
for private hire |

Succesful SMPoW concerts at The
Playhouse have featured Martin Simpson, Shalil Shankar, Last
Night's Fun, Martyn Joseph & Stewart Henderson, Vin Garbutt,
Show of Hands, Bob Fox & Billy Mitchell, Ralph McTell, Acoustic
Strawbs and the late Eric Roche |
In conjunction with Sleaford
and District Civic Trust, The Playhouse is a regular venue for
the Heritage Weekend each September. In September 2003, The Playhouse
appeared on a BBC East Midlands heritage restoration feature.

Sleaford Little
Theatre is lookimng forward to celebrating its 60th Anniversary
in 2009 as an amateur dramatic group.. its list of previous productions
reads as a catalogue of English Drama.

2004 saw a spectacular
SLT production - 'David Copperfield', followed by the very well
received comedy 'How the Other Half Loves' by Alan Aykbourn and
'Christmas is not for Families' presented in December
'The Wind In The Willows',
adapted by Alan Bennett from the original story by Kenneth Grahame,
was performed to capacity audiences in April 2005, under the
direction of Sue Robey. What
a cast!
The Playhouse regularly
hosts events during the annual Sleaford Live festival and since 2005 Sleaford
Little Theatre has taken part by promoting two evenings of one-act
plays which since 2006 has been shared with other local theatre
groups. In 2007 Sleaford Little Theatre, Heckington Players and
Red Lion Theatre Company from Horncastle each presented a one-act
play for the audience's entertainment.
